South Africa’s State Owned Entities (SOEs) continue to be under scrutiny as they place a huge burden on the fiscus.
Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan, has called for a sense of urgency among all stakeholders of state owned enterprises – saying SOEs cannot solely rely on government for financial sustainability.
Last week Minister Gordhan released a Special Paper on Eskom, setting out the entity’s road to recovery.
Eskom, South African Airways (SAA), DENEL, and Transnet, are some of the examples of the country’s struggling SOEs in constant need of bailouts, prompting questions about whether these entities should be privatised.
